Stana Katic isn’t sure she wants her character to become romantically involved with the title character on “Castle” (tonight at 10 on WCVB, Ch. 5).

Katic plays NYPD Detective Kate Beckett on the ABC dramedy. Since the show premiered last spring, Beckett has verbally sparred with Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), a famous novelist who also happens to solve crimes.

“I don’t know yet if I want them to get together, honestly,” Katic said recently in an interview from the show’s set in Los Angeles.

“There’s those shows, older shows, that I remember seeing where eventually the couple gets together and they still have this fabulous play. And there’s the more modern version that’s, well, if they get together, then you lose the chemistry. I think that we’ll find an nice balance between the two.”

The Ontario native believes their relationship will take a few seasons to evolve.

“I think we’ve got a lot of exploring to do of each other before we can go there,” she said. “And then if they do end up going to that commitment in, let’s say, season four, I think that even in marriage, there’s a tremendous amount of fun to be had. Or maybe I’m just a bit naive and hopeful.”

She hopes that viewers will learn more about Kate’s personal life this season.

“There are so many wonderful women who have to create a certain kind of persona in their professional life and they are totally different when they’re outside of the work walls,” she said. “I would love to see Kate be another person on the outside because I think that would be more true to form to what professional women are really like.”

“Castle” reminds Katic of “The Thin Man” film series; the show taps into viewers’ desire just to be entertained.

“I think there’s enough drama going on in our real life,” she said. “I don’t need to point anyone to the simple economics of our time. So I think people want to go home and just relax and laugh a bit, and I think this kind of show has that classic sense of humor that people enjoy.”

“Castle” is Katic’s first TV series. The actress, who trained at the Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, relies on co-star Fillion to help her navigate the business.

“I really was a newbie coming into this,” she said. “He’s always really generous with information. He’s totally like his character. He’s like my goofy older brother.”

“Castle” has a few more stories to tell.

ABC confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that it has picked up a full second season of the crime show, which has been pulling down consistent ratings this fall. The network had originally ordered only 13 episodes, as is customary for midseason shows.

The back-nine order comes a day after the show set up a way for mystery novelist Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) to keep tailing NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). In Monday’s episode, Castle’s novel starring the Nikki Heat character based on Beckett debuted to rave reviews and big sales — which means the publisher wants a sequel — and Beckett got the order from above to keep him on as a consultant.

“Castle” is the fifth ABC show to get a full-season order this fall. The other four — “FlashForward,” “The Middle,” “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town” — are all newcomers.

The series has drawn steady but unspectacular ratings so far this season. It’s averaging about 10.2 million viewers a week and a 2.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. Those numbers include seven-day DVR viewing for the first two weeks of the season; its same-day ratings have hovered between 9 million and 9.5 million viewers and a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating.
